IVIPB K9 security units are trained for security and screening, including search and detection of intruders, explosive materials, and narcotics.
They are important and highly trained members of our security and detection teams.
We take a groundbreaking approach to reshape the way canine services are delivered. Leveraging our teams' combined experience and lessons learned from other canine service providers,
We have developed a model to provide consistent and sustainable canine services. Our team has been actively engaged in the War on Terrorism deploying canine teams around the globe in order to mitigate the threat of explosive materials and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
The IVIPB also has several detector dogs in service. This specialized group, mostly Labs, is trained to detect items such as controlled drugs and substances, firearms and ammunition, and explosives. Although it is not as physically demanding as the German Shepherds' tasks, detection is every bit as important for the safety of our community. Our detector dogs train in two courses which run approximately ten weeks, followed by weekly training to maintain their skills and proficiency levels.
Our canines provide support to all sections the Police Service needs. When they're not busy with day-to-day operations, the officers and their canine partners are often seen at community events, giving everyone a chance to see the dogs in action.
